Ho suonato in molti paesi e luoghi diversi.

Blazej Malinowski: All’inizio di Why So Silent? gli eventi erano piuttosto piccoli.

(Prima organizzavamo eventi musicali in Varsavia).

Blazej Malinowski: Dobbiamo, tutti, aspettare e vedere!

Grazie a Blazej Malinowski!

ENGLISH VERSION

Blazej Malinowski is a Polish producer who with sound gives the obsession and instinct towards Techno.

A while ago, a film called “Human Traffic” (1999) was released.

It tells of electronic music in England and how it was a means of escape for a group of boys led by Jip chained to corporate life and the paranoia derived from it. But when the weekend came, the inhibitions were not allowed, the rules did not exist, drugs and music served as “emergency exits”.

I have sex with music, and believe me brother, hard all night” (Moff in one of the phrases in the film)

And if electronic music is the light from the tunnel, or that breath of fresh air that impacts on your face after yet another week thrown between books, work or family, you can not help but let yourself be carried away by pleasure, the primitive one, coming to a liberating orgasm sinking into dark, obscure and infernal atmospheres in which the rules of the game are made in their own image and likeness.

An example is Blazej Malinowski who with his sound rules outclassed, torn, burned, seizing power, the musical, in which society can not do anything but submit to the will of the kingdom of shadows.

Blazej Malinowski is a Polish dj and producer, one who rides the crest of the wave and does not stop for a moment. Projects on projects manages to reconcile the passion for music and for the general culture creating a union between spectator and producer.

Promoter of “Why so silent?” a series of events that combine electronic music with silent films that are 100 years old; the “Fünfte Strasse” radio with friend and producer Michał Wolski; sets and live around the world. Her daughter was recently born to whom she dedicated the last album released in January 2018 with the label TGP (The Gods Planet) by Claudio PRC and Ness.

Blazej Malinowski’s techno is a liaison between vices and virtues.

Upon listening, each body moves with the sinuosity of a snake, left to the effects of techno and a mental and physical insanity that envelops. You can not do without it. The perverse, esoteric, dark and infernal sounds are the flames that incede in the darkness and in the night, the one you would never want to end. And no matter where you are, in the car, on the street or on the track, he finds you and drags you into the most instinctive and obsessive part of your personality.

We managed to have a chat with him.

MM: Thanks Blazej Malinowski for giving us some of your time. I would like to start from the fulcrum: your sound. Deep, dark, close to an esoteric and tormented techno. You’re one of the pioneers about this. How is born the passion for these sounds and how do you reproduce them?

Blazej Malinowski: I do not really consider myself a pioneer and to be honest I do not think about it in these terms. It all comes down to the sound that interests me and to be more exact: I am more drawn to specific type of the vibe or in other words energy with the music I am making. For me the most important thing is the atmosphere of the tracks that I am creating. But, in the end, I have to admit that I am kind of addicted to the certain style and sounds, at least for now. We will see where it is going to take me.

MM: Your last album INNER TENSION released, with TGP (The Gods Planet) by Claudio PRC and Ness, in January 2018 (a good deal of time) represents well this concept of torment. The title is self-sufficient. A tension that grows, leading almost to despair, to insanity. Is this the representation of the times we live or is it simply the artistic vein you have? After all, madness and torment welcomes everyone today.

Blazej Malinowski: I feel that finding the balance in life always goes hand in hand with the tension, sometimes with some sort of anxiety and struggle as well. Not a lot people know this but this record is dedicated to my daughter so when I was making this record I had a lot to do since she was still very small. All those feelings came together on this release.

MM: In addition, the album cover is your photograph. Can I ask you where did you do it? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Do you spend a lot of time in photography?

Blazej Malinowski: I took the picture for the cover after one of my gigs in Katowice (Poland), close to the morning. It was made on the spur of the moment, as it usually happens when I take pictures. I think this tunnel is now renovated so it does not look as on the picture. I take most of the pictures when I travel, but I do not put any pressure on it. Sometimes I keep them just for me; other times they are becoming more like the cover design I did for Kontrafaktum records. The first 10 releases can be seen as one big image when combined all together.

MM: Besides TGP you came out with Semantica, Phorma, Technosoul, Silent Season, Kontrafaktum. Big names in the deep-hypnotic techno scene. How do you get to these levels?

Blazej Malinowski: It is all about work in my head as well as about putting as much effort in making music as possible. It took me a while to be able to release my music on those labels. I am very grateful that I was given this opportunity and that I am now connected to them. I get a huge support from The Gods Planet (Ness and Claudio PRC), who believed in me and my music. It was a dream to release my tracks there, the same as with Svreca’s Semantica Records among others. It is still difficult for me to apprehend, that labels and artists that were (and still are) a big inspiration for me are wiling to release and support my music. I really hope that we will continue working together. I have a lot of respect for all of them.

MM: In addition to the releases you are very active with the sets and live around the world. Recall that in November you hear in Reims (November 4), Berlin (November 8), and Warsaw (November 23). Is there a place you remember with greater pleasure?

Blazej Malinowski: These past two years were amazing. I played in many different countries and venue. I feel grateful that the promoters started to invite me more often to play at their events. Taking into account the most recent events, I remember very well the party in Bassiani with The Gods Planet and a great night in Vurt club in Seoul with big pleasure. Playing at the Freqs of Nature Festival was also one of the kind experience.

MM: Just in Warsaw you will find another appointment of your project “Why so silent?”. The concept is simple but in my view, it is very complicated to represent it. They are live evenings in which I project silent films. Many guests took part in this initiative including Claudio PRC, Glos, Eastern Renaissance and others. In the meantime, I ask you what films you choose and from some pictures I’ve seen on the internet, you put the film followed by the music in the foreground. Why?

Blazej Malinowski: I have been doing this project for five years now. The next big event will take place in Warsaw on November 23rd. It is going to be a second club event of this project – usually I did more experimental evenings with live/dj performances and silent movies, where the audience sits down and listens to the music while watching the movies. When thinking about the evening I always think first about the artist and music that she or he creates. After inviting them I usually send a few titles, so they can pick one out. They can do whatever they want, although I always say that I do not expect a soundtrack or a sound design. In my mind the movies will follow the music and not the other way around. So it is music that becomes the heart of the project.

MM: Why does the need arise to support the image and the video to your music? With what criteria do you choose the music to play in the film you project? How does the audience understand all this?

Blazej Malinowski: At the beginning of Why So Silent? project the events were rather small. I mostly invited my friends to them – I mean both to play and to watch & listen. With the support of a friend Dorota Tomaszewska we were able to make around 30 events in the venue called Znajomi Znajomych in Warsaw. And to answer your question – it was not the need to get an image for the music that started the whole thing. I was not looking for the movie sound production either. I find it interesting and inspiring to find experimental movies that are 100 years old. I found it even more captivating to watch them together with music that I love, from the artists that are inspiring. I am trying to select unknown movies and I never reveal the titles before the event. I want it to be a surprise. I did not expect it but audience liked the idea very much. That is one of the reasons I have been doing it for such a long time.

MM: Another interesting project is Fünfte Strasse (fifth street), together with your friend Michał Wolski. A radio show in which you promote electronic music from techno to ambient. What is the fifth road? How is the relationship with Wolski? Tell us something more and how you choose the artists to invite.

Blazej Malinowski: We invented the name at one of our meetings. We have been friends for many years now and our radio show will pass the 9th year mark very soon. Before that we were organizing monthly music events in Warsaw – we go way back. The regular radio shows are always connected to the releases we like, so we play and talk about the music that we love. From the beginning we were very open to invite artists to the studio; the producers Dj’s and promoters who are active on the scene or that are just starting with their music career. Radio is the place where they can talk about themselves and play Live or a Dj sets to present what they are doing on dally basis.

MM: What should we expect from Blazej Malinowski’s artistic career?

Blazej Malinowski: As usual I will put as much time into my work as possible and I hope something good will come out of it. Thinking about the results can be dangerous in my opinion so I would rather focus on my studio work, curating events from time to and continuing the radio show with Michał.

MM: Where can the electronic scene arrive in your opinion?

Blazej Malinowski: We all have to wait and see!
